Many devils are merely unfortunate and are demoted to lemures. A select few are grandiose failures, however; powerful fiends or even celestials of whom an example is made.
Boatmen are enormous, fifty-foot-tall armless devils with hollow, bloated, egg-shaped bodies, capable of carrying dozens of people at a time. Their legs have been twisted into the shape of decaying trees, while their heads are those of humans. Boatmen are tasked with the duty of towing infernal ships and wagons across the Hells. Others are used as mobile fortresses, or even have taverns built inside them. Enterprising devils nail platforms and other surfaces to their heads, creating additional stories and extensions from which infernal forces can fight.
Boatmen do not speak, too obsessed with their degradation and lowly position to do so. However, they understand Infernal.
Combat
Boatmen are difficult to rouse from their depression, but if this can be done they make terrifying opponents.
A boatman devil’s natural weapons, as well as any weapons it wields, are treated as evil-aligned and lawful-aligned for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.
Spell-Like Abilities: At will: unseen servant (within 10-foot radius); 3/day: bear’s endurance, bull’s strength, longstrider; 16th-level caster.
Trample (Ex): A boatman can trample Large or smaller creatures. Reflex half DC 31. The save DC is Strength-based.
