Tapeworms

Tapeworms are parasitic flatworms that live in the host's digestive tract. They have no mouths or digestive tract of their own, as they absorb food that has already been digested. They infect only vertebrate hosts, so invertebrate or part-invertebrate creatures tend to be quite safe from them.

Infection

Most tapeworm infections occur when the host eats food containing tapeworm larvae or eggs. Since tapeworms are encountered in the fæces of infected creatures, people that handle ordure (refuse collectors, farmhands, children) are particularly at risk. High-risk foods include raw or undercooked beef, pork and fish.

Diseases

Cestodiasis: The host ingests tapeworm larvae in raw or undercooked meat. The tapeworm grows to maturity in the host's intestine. Symptoms can include nausea and abdominal discomfort.

Infection DC: Ingestion 12
Incubation: 1d3 months
Damage: 1 Con
Additional Effects: The host must make a Fortitude save (DC 12) every four hours or be sickened.

Neurocysticercosis: This nastier form of tapeworm infestation occurs when the host ingests tapeworm eggs. The larvae then develop in the central nervous system, causing seizures.

Infection DC: Ingestion 16
Incubation: 1d3 months
Damage: 1d3 Con, 1d6 Dex
Additional Effects: The host must make a successful Fortitude save (DC 16) every hour or suffer a seizure. Each seizure lasts 1d6 rounds and is equivalent to being stunned.
