Brother Chthonius

Level 10

Now we're cooking with charcoal! At level 10, Brother Chthonius makes a formidable ally or adversary. He has enough power to muscle into a dungeon and make himself indispensible. His skills and spells give him the wherewithal to start setting challenges for human and monster alike, making people start to take his claim to be an agent of fate seriously.

As before, Concentration, Heal and Spellcraft are maxed out while Knowledge skills are topped out at 5 ranks apiece. He has enough Knowledge (nature) to give him a slightly better chance of survival on the surface world. Given that he spends most of his time in the dungeon, however, it's about time for him to have Knowledge (architecture and engineering) since he should really know how the traps and secret doors work. He's just started to learn about the planes, just to bring the Survival bonuses up slightly.

As far as his feats go, I've decided to pay attention to one area in particular that has let Brother Chthonius down: combat. That low Dexterity is really beginning to make a nuisance of itself, so to offset the penalty to his Reflex saves I've given him Lightning Reflexes. Since his hand-to-hand combat could do with improvement, he now has Weapon Focus (heavy mace).

Around this time we start to see a major shift in Brother Chthonius' equipment -- at long last he has a +1 heavy mace so he doesn't have to rely on casting spells on his mace, just to get it halfway decent. He still has a couple of scrolls of greater magic weapon just to boost that up a bit when he needs to. Similarly, he now has magic armour, and about time too! Since higher Wisdom equals more spells and better saves, he'd be a fool not to get a periapt of Wisdom at this stage, so he has one of them.

By level 10, Brother Chthonius has access to one of the most important spells for a priest of the dungeons: wall of stone. The spell's perfect for him: he can partition rooms off, seal corridors, repair floors, walls and ceilings. Given enough time, he could even build his own dungeon! Depending on how serious you feel, he could be contracted out to budding overlords and conspirators. 'Oo put that pit trap there? 'Ckin cowboys. 'sgonna cost yer! Despite its usefulness, he's still pretty limited to the amount of 5th-level spells he can have, so for the moment he'll have to make do with scrolls. It's not a perfect world.
